We’ll Judge Your Space? No Way...That, and 4 Other Common Myths Dispelled
We all want our homes to work for us, not be a source of stress and disorganization. But sometimes life gets in the way, and sometimes we lack the motivation or skills to set up our homes in ways that make the most sense for our real-life families. Hiring a professional organizer can feel daunting because it seems like it’s something you should be able to do for yourself. You might’ve heard some myths that hold you back from hiring an organizer. Today I’m going to address some of those common myths and set you at ease about the process of working with a professional organizer in your home or small business.
Myth #1: Pro Organizers Are Judgmental of Your Home’s Appearance
Professional organizing is a judgment free zone! I promise we have all had times in our lives when our home is out of control and we really don’t want to bring in someone from the outside because it just feels embarrassing. I’m here to tell you that pro organizers have seen it all and are not intimidated. I always tell my clients they don’t need to do anything at all to prepare for me to show up. It’s my job to help you—not your job to impress me. It’s important for me to see the normal state of your home so we can assess and find solutions that really work.
Myth #2: Pro Organizers Are Way Too Expensive for Most People
Hiring a professional organizer is a great investment in your home’s future which sometimes pays for itself right away, and always pays for itself in the long run. In the case of a disorganized household, you often end up over buying items that you don’t realize you already have. A clearly labeled backstock system is a game changer for busy households. Think for a moment how much time and money you’ve spent on your own trying to get the right furniture or organizing bins in place, but being disappointed with the results because there was no clear plan. My clients are often surprised by our ability to use their existing products and come up with the perfect solution they just weren’t able to see on their own. Clients who are moving or renovating will probably recoup their organizing costs immediately because we will shorten the downtime where they are eating out or living in temporary quarters. I have helped with home staging before photos and open houses, resulting in quicker home sales for clients. Decluttering before the movers arrive will cut down on moving costs as well. What some might consider too expensive, others consider simply to be normal operating costs of running a household. Getting organized always saves time and money in the long run, and often pays for itself more quickly than you’d think!
Myth #3: Pro Organizers Make You Get Rid of All Your Things
It’s your stuff! I am honestly not interested in telling you what needs to stay and what needs to go. I am, however, interested in helping you have confidence in your decisions and helping you act on those decisions, so that the things you keep are by choice and not by default. I can take donations for you, and also help you find the perfect storage solution for items you want to keep. My role as a professional organizer is to advise and assist; you always remain in control of the final decision.
Myth #4: Pro Organizers Require You to Provide Your Own Storage
My services include shopping for any needed products or furniture to help you achieve your storage goals. I will share shopping links with you for prior approval. Then, you can either purchase yourself and I’ll help you install, or I can make the purchase on your behalf and bring the items to your home at our next session. Anything we don’t use I’ll return for a refund and you will reimburse me only for the cost of products actually used. I don’t do affiliate marketing, so anything I recommend is custom to your budget, project, and taste. I will work with you to make sure we fully utilize anything you already have and love, but I will also do the legwork to track down whatever is missing to make your space work for you!
Myth #5: Pro Organizers Transform Your Home in a Single Day
You may have seen organizers on TV bringing in a large team to completely transform a space in a single day. While that is incredibly satisfying to watch, it’s not usually realistic to accomplish your organizing goals in only one day! Most of us require a little more time and thought to get where we want to be. I think that’s good news because my clients often discover more about their priorities as we begin working together. As we continue through the organizing process, I will help you discover the unique categories that fit your family and your home. I’ll provide you with solutions that are not merely beautiful to look at, but that fit your life and are realistic for you to maintain. Slow and steady wins the organizing race.
