Beauty at Home: How to Organize Makeup, Skin Care & Hair Care Products
We are surrounded by a wealth of products in the beauty industry. But all this variety can quickly get overwhelming when it starts to overflow our space. How can we organize these products and their related backstock for an easier and more enjoyable routine at home? Let’s explore some helpful storage solutions for skin care, makeup, hair care, nail treatments, and more!
Point of Use
When possible, it’s best to store items at their point of use. Most beauty and skincare products are used in the bathroom, but even in large bathrooms, not every item can be stored close at hand. Things that are used daily (or several times daily) should get priority for point of use storage. This includes items such as tooth care, deoderant, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I would also suggest that any hygiene items used by more than one person should be stored in a centrally convenient location, such as a drawer next to the sink or a countertop organizer unit.
Time of Use
Once the daily used items have claimed the prime real estate, the next logical step is to group items together by time of use. For instance, you may have an evening skincare routine using different products than in the morning. I suggest that products used daily in the mornings should get priority over evening products, because we are usually more time crunched in the morning. If you have a typical weekday makeup look, keep all those items together in close proximity to where you get ready in the morning. I personally use an organizer tray in a drawer for my daily makeup routine. I pull out all products to the counter, and then replace them one by one into the tray as I use them. If all the items for your evening skincare routine are in one acrylic organizer bin, you could follow the same approach by bringing the bin to the bathroom counter and emptying it, then replacing each product as it is used. Then the entire bin can be returned to a nearby cabinet or drawer all at once. This allows you to keep like with like without cluttering up your countertops.
Frequency of Use
Weekly items, such as spa masks or nail care, can be stored in an alternate location and brought into the bathroom when needed. In larger bathrooms with good storage, all products may fit in the bathroom itself. However, it can be a smart move to store backstock elsewhere to avoid unnecessary crowding or confusion as to which container is being actively used. I highly recommend having a designated personal care product backstock area so you know where to look when your favorite product is empty. Additionally, if you have special occasion makeup or perfumes, it may be best to store these item types outside the bathroom to avoid too much moisture. An organizer caddy with a carrying handle would be a great choice for items stored in a cabinet. Or choose a storage option that matches your bedroom decor and display those lipsticks or nail colors on a dressing table.
Hopefully these thoughts are helpful as you organize your beauty and personal care products. Storing like with like is a guiding principle for organization, but sometimes it’s tricky identifying your categories. Rather than putting all moisturizers together, it makes sense to store your products based on point of use, time of use, and frequency of use. This approach results in smoother mornings and easier clean up. Bonus: you’ll probably also reduce overbuying because you know exactly what you have in your backstock.
Cheers,
Karina
